The Coffee Table Test
Before a single line of code was written for Lydia.com, we spent a great deal of time thinking about a much simpler question: What kind of conversations do we hope people will have here?
The answer did not come from Silicon Valley or a social media playbook. It came from a familiar image that exists in homes around the world—a coffee table.
Some of life's most meaningful conversations happen there. Friends catch up after months apart. Mothers and daughters share advice. Sisters laugh together. Difficult news is discussed with honesty. Someone asks for help. Someone else simply listens. Not everyone agrees, but everyone has the opportunity to be heard with dignity.
We wanted Lydia.com to feel more like those conversations and less like the noisy corners of the internet where outrage is rewarded, certainty is amplified, and attention often matters more than understanding.
The Coffee Table Test
Whenever we think about an article, a community post, or a moderation decision, we ask a simple question:
Would this contribute to a thoughtful conversation among women sitting together around a coffee table?
If the answer is yes, it probably belongs on Lydia. If it depends on humiliation, contempt, personal attacks, or performative outrage, it probably does not.
A Different Kind of Community
Lydia™ is not designed to maximise clicks or keep people endlessly scrolling. Our ambition is different. We hope to build a community where women can think together, learn from one another, ask difficult questions, share reliable information, and leave conversations feeling more informed, more connected, and more hopeful.
That does not mean every conversation must be comfortable. Important topics are often challenging. Respectful disagreement is welcome. Honest questions are encouraged. Diverse experiences enrich a community. What matters is not that everyone reaches the same conclusion, but that everyone is treated with dignity.
People Before Metrics
The philosophy behind Lydia™ is simple: people matter more than metrics. Long-term trust matters more than short-term engagement. Curiosity is more valuable than certainty. Wisdom is more enduring than popularity.
An Invitation
Whether you have joined Lydia™ to learn, to contribute, or simply to listen for a while, you are warmly welcome.
Every thoughtful post, every respectful comment, and every act of kindness helps shape the community we are building together.
If, years from now, Lydia™ feels a little like gathering around a welcoming coffee table with thoughtful friends, we will know that we have built something worthwhile.
Welcome to Lydia.com.
